BODH GAYA - RAJGIR - NALANDA - VAISHALIA - KUSHINAGAR - LUMBINI - NEPAL - KUSHINAGAR - SARNATH - VARANASI - SHRAVASTI - DELHI

Itinerary

DAY 1–3:  BODH GAYA: - Arrival and the heart of the pilgrimage — the place of the Buddha's enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree.

Mahabodhi Temple & Bodhi Tree
The UNESCO World Heritage temple marking the exact spot of enlightenment. The current Bodhi Tree is a direct descendant of the original, with the Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) at its base. Best visited at dawn or dusk for chanting monks and lamplight.

International Monastery Zone
A walking circuit of monasteries built by Buddhist nations — the Royal Thai Monastery, Japanese Nippon Myohoji, Bhutanese Monastery, Tibetan Karma Temple, and the 80-foot Great Buddha Statue.

Free day / meditation
Many travelers use the third day for a short meditation course, a walk through Sujata village (where Sujata offered Buddha his first meal after austerity), or simply rest before the road days ahead.

DAY 4: RAJGIR & NALANDA (day trip from Gaya)

Nalanda University Ruins
The red-brick ruins of the world's oldest residential university (5th–12th century CE), once home to 10,000 monks and scholars. The adjoining archaeological museum holds Buddhist sculpture recovered from the site.

Vulture's Peak (Gridhakuta)
A modest hilltop climb where the Buddha delivered several key sermons, including the Heart Sutra and Lotus Sutra. A Japanese-built peace pagoda (Vishwa Shanti Stupa) sits nearby, reachable by ropeway.

Venuvana (Bamboo Grove)
A tranquil park gifted to the Buddha by King Bimbisara — considered the first Buddhist monastery.

DAY 5: VAISHALIA: -  scenic 5–6 hour drive from Gaya, often combined with a stop at Kesariya en route.

Ashoka Pillar & Relic Stupa
A well-preserved lion-topped Ashokan pillar marks the site where the Buddha announced his approaching death and delivered his final sermon. Nearby, a relic stupa once enshrined a portion of his ashes.

Kesariya Stupa (en route)
Believed to be the tallest Buddhist stupa in the world, predating Borobudur — a worthwhile detour if time allows.

DAY 6–7: KUSHINAGAR: - Travel onward from Vaishali/Patna to the place of the Buddha's death and final liberation (Parinirvana).

Mahaparinirvana Temple
Houses a 6.1-metre reclining Buddha statue marking the exact site of his passing, carved from a single sandstone block.

Ramabhar Stupa
The cremation site of the Buddha, a large earthen mound set in quiet parkland.

International Temple Row
Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Burmese, and Sri Lankan temples line the town, each reflecting a distinct national style of Buddhist architecture.

DAY 8: (OPTIONAL) LUMBINI, NEPAL: - A 1.5-hour drive across the Nepal border from Kushinagar to the Buddha's birthplace.

Maya Devi Temple & Sacred Garden
Marks the exact birth spot of Prince Siddhartha, with the Ashokan pillar (249 BCE) confirming the location, the sacred pond, and the descendant of the original sal tree.

Monastic Zone
A modern planned zone of monasteries built by different Buddhist countries, split into Eastern and Western sections.

DAY 9–10: SARNATH & VARANASI

Sarnath — Site of the First Sermon
Where the Buddha gave his first teaching (Dharmachakra Pravartana) after enlightenment, turning the Wheel of Dharma for the first time.
? Dhamek Stupa — the massive 5th-century stupa marking the exact spot of the sermon
? Ashoka Pillar remains — the original lion capital (now India's national emblem) is housed in the on-site museum
? Mulagandha Kuti Vihar — a modern temple with Japanese frescoes depicting the Buddha's life

Varanasi
The nearest major city — evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and an early boat ride along the ghats pair naturally with the Sarnath visit.

DAY 11 (OPTIONAL) SHRAVASTI
Jetavana Monastery
Where the Buddha spent 24 monsoon retreats — more than anywhere else — teaching many of his most quoted sutras. The ruins include the Ananda Bodhi Tree and monastic cells. A worthwhile detour only if extra days are available, as it's a longer drive off the main circuit.

DAY 12: DELHI DEPARTURE: - Fly from Varanasi to Delhi (approx. 1.5 hours) or take an overnight train the evening before to arrive fresh for an onward international departure. Ium Destination

Inclusions/Exclusions

Practical Notes:-
? Fly into Gaya (nearest airport to Bodh Gaya) and out of Varanasi into Delhi — the most efficient routing for this circuit.
? Hire a private car with driver for the full circuit; public transport between the smaller sites (Rajgir, Vaishali, Kushinagar) is slow and infrequent.
? Carry layers for winter mornings (Oct–Mar) in Bihar/UP; avoid travel April–June due to extreme heat.
? Modest dress is expected at all temple and monastery sites; shoes are removed before entering.
? Build in a Nepal visa (available on arrival for most nationalities) if extending to Lumbini on Day 8.
